The “Ban the Box” movement has led many states to remove questions about a job applicant’s criminal history. In Tennessee, state employers may not ask about an applicant’s criminal history on an initial job application. However, the employer may ask about an applicant’s criminal history after the initial application screening. There is not currently legislation prohibiting questions about criminal history for private employers. Disclosing your DUI conviction on a job application or interview may seem daunting. However, employers may see the conviction on criminal background checks anyway, so it is important to be honest about your criminal history. 

How Do You Talk About Your DUI During an Interview?

If an employer asks about your criminal history during an interview, it is important to know what to say next. Here are some tips for improving your chances of getting a job with a DUI.

  • Do not make excuses. While it can be tempting to make excuses about your DUI during a job interview, do not do this. If you try to tell an employer that it was not completely your fault or that you were just young, it may sound as if you are not taking responsibility for your actions. Instead, take full accountability for your DUI.

  • Discuss the changes you have made. If you have a DUI on your record, you need to show an employer that you have changed your ways and would be a great asset to the company right now. For instance, if you successfully completed a 12-step program, mention that in your interview. Additionally, tell an employer that you have never driven drunk since and continue to make responsible decisions.

  • Talk about your strengths. Once you have disclosed your DUI conviction, it is time to shift the focus to your strengths. Tell the employer about your skills and experience and why you would be a good fit for the position.
