Proposed DUI bill could add red mark to offender license
Getting caught driving under the influence not only has negative legal consequences, but can be associated with a plethora of other life altering legal decisions. A DUI carries with it the shame and disappointment of personal choices, and a DUI almost inevitably tarnishes your record.
Stiff law changes proposed for DUI offenders
Recently, state lawmakers in Tennessee proposed a bill to assist in stopping drunk driving before it happens. Approving the bill would add another obstacle in getting alcohol into the hands of DUI offenders. It would make it illegal for a person charged with a DUI to be sold alcohol anywhere within the state.
The offender’s license would be marked with a red strip alerting sellers to identify prior offenders. If liquor stores sell alcohol to someone with this identifying marker, their establishment could face misdemeanor charges and fines.
An effort to save lives
Tennessee is a sovereign state when it comes to deciding the laws that dictate alcohol. Therefore, a bill such as this is completely legal to pass. Unfortunately, alcohol consumption and driving often go together and lead to many high stakes consequences for the offender and victims who die or experience serious injuries as a result. Laws creating barriers to these possibilities are often welcomed by many who share in the sorrow of “if only” stories.
Strong criminal defense is critical when seeking legal resolution to DUI accusations. Going through the process with strong legal defense can alleviate aspects of the reality you face.
