What to Do After a Car Accident in Tennessee

Posted on in Motor Vehicle Accidents

Knoxville car crash lawyerThe moments after you have been involved in a car accident can be a confusing and hectic time. Your adrenaline may be going so much that you don’t notice an injury that you may have suffered. The other driver may be injured as well, or angry and looking for someone to blame. A split second could impact your family, your health, your ability to work, and much more.

Check for Injuries, Collect Information, and Get Help

With traffic volume growing every year, it is likely you will be involved in a car accident at some point in your driving life. With this in mind, there are some basic actions to take following a car accident.

If you are in a crash, be sure to:

  • Check those involved for injuries - Check on any passengers in your car and the other vehicle to make sure nobody is hurt.
  • Move to safety - Make sure you are out of danger and not putting yourself or others at risk of another accident. If you can, you should move your vehicles off to the side of the road.
  • Call the police - Get the information about the responding officer and make sure you get a copy of the accident report before they leave the scene.
  • Collect information - Exchange information with the other driver and any witnesses at the scene. You should also document the accident scene, including taking pictures or videos of the vehicles involved, the road conditions and traffic control devices, weather and visibility, and any debris or skid marks left by the accident.
  • Avoid discussing the accident with the other driver - It is not a good idea to assign blame or take responsibility. Emotions could also be running high and avoiding a confrontation is best. You also should avoid talking about details of your insurance coverage.
  • Get medical attention – If you did not need immediate medical attention at the scene of the accident, you should still see your doctor if you are experiencing any pain or unusual symptoms following the crash. Some injuries may not manifest themselves until a day or two later. Document your trips to the doctor, plus any pain you are feeling and how your recovery is going.
  • Contact a lawyer – Don’t wait to contact a lawyer who can help you through the process and act as your advocate. A lawyer can assist with the accident investigation, help talk to your insurance company and make sure they are properly processing your claim, and pursue compensation for your injuries, lost income from time away from work, pain and suffering, and other damages.
