A state law that takes away driver’s licenses because of unpaid court debt may go down this year. That’s because of a landmark lawsuit in the U.S. District Court this spring.

Judge Aleta A. Trauger refuses the state of Tennessee’s request to reject the lawsuit. In her official memorandum about the case, she stated that one of the fundamental rights of citizens, the right to travel interstate, is not recognized by this law. Stiff law changes proposed for DUI offenders

Recently, state lawmakers in Tennessee proposed a bill to assist in stopping drunk driving before it happens. Approving the bill would add another obstacle in getting alcohol into the hands of DUI offenders. It would make it illegal for a person charged with a DUI to be sold alcohol anywhere within the state.

The offender’s license would be marked with a red strip alerting sellers to identify prior offenders. If liquor stores sell alcohol to someone with this identifying marker, their establishment could face misdemeanor charges and fines.
